Baker Newby LLP and its predecessor firms have been practicing law in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia since 1937. Starting with a sole practitioner in Depression-era Chilliwack, the Firm has grown to become one of the largest law firms in British Columbia outside Vancouver.

The Firm has always served clients throughout the Fraser Valley. In 1989, it expanded from its Chilliwack base by opening an office in Abbotsford.

Baker Newby LLP has a distinguished legal history. Four of our former partners have been appointed to the bench, while four of our current partners, James D. Baker, David R. Renwick, John C. Lee, and W. Martin Finch have been awarded the distinction of Queen’s Counsel. The Queen’s Counsel designation is an honor conferred on members of the legal profession to recognize exceptional merit and contribution. Appointments require that nominees demonstrate professional integrity and good character.

The partners and associates of Baker Newby LLP have always believed in serving the communities in which they live and work. We have always been active in local bar associations, with many of us serving as executives in the Chilliwack and Abbotsford bar associations and in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, and Canadian bar associations. We also traditionally participate in community affairs, from serving on church, hospital, and school boards to holding executive positions with numerous local, provincial, and national service and charitable organizations.

Throughout the Fraser Valley, agricultural associations, fair boards, chambers of commerce, Rotary clubs, YM/YWCAs, Big Brothers organizations, arts councils, political associations and youth groups have all had members of our firm as active members and leaders over the years.

Some members of our Firm have also become active in industry groups, such as home builders associations, construction organizations, agricultural associations, and health care groups. Some have been regular lecturers on various legal topics at seminars and courses throughout the province. Others have taught law and related topics at universities in British Columbia and abroad.
