"The
University of the Fraser Valley will provide degree-granting
programs for thousands of students closer to where they live
and for international students attracted to its exceptional
teaching and community orientation," B.C. Premier Gordon
Campbell stated. Under the University Act of British
Columbia, UCFV has now earned its long-awaited university
status. Starting in 1974 as the Fraser Valley College
and eventually granted its university college status in 1991,
the facility will now be referred to as UFV.
The
previous university college status, which was not recognized
out of province, once hindered international students from
attending UFV. Now, with the addition of UFV's $21-million
state-of-the-art trades and technology addition in Chilliwack
and impending project of the Chilliwack campus, this will
make the Fraser Valley "more competitive, attracting
more professionals and keeping grads closer to home,"
says UFV President Skip Bassford.
