Criminal law has always been a significant part of the practice of
law at Baker Newby LLP. Through the generations
of lawyers that have worked here in the law, a tradition of service
to clients experiencing difficulties in this area has developed. That
tradition is based on an understanding of the peculiar difficulties
clients suffer as a result of a criminal charge. Our senior criminal
practitioners regularly handle complex, serious matters and have long
experience in trials at all levels of Court in British Columbia.
A
common concern for a person facing a criminal charge is confidentiality,
and that is assured through the oaths of confidentiality that are
required of our staff and counsel. The firm is sensitive to the
difficulties and pressures imposed on a client and family by a criminal
charge. We discreetly avoid publicity where appropriate to our clients'
interest. Because of our experience (all our criminal lawyers have
experience as Prosecutors), we have the knowledge of the law and
procedure to ensure a criminal matter is dealt with efficiently
and effectively. Our criminal lawyers have true depth of experience
in all areas of the criminal law including cases of homicide, sexual
assault, commercial fraud and theft.
We
realize that any criminal charge is a serious matter to the person
charged. Experience also has taught us that clients profit from
an understanding of the relative severity of their charges. This
we strive to give them. Besides the very serious criminal matters,
we routinely defend charges of impaired driving, assault and simple
theft. Our lawyers have collectively dealt with over a thousand
impaired driving cases. This has allowed us to keep aware of continuing
changes in this highly technical area.
Our senior criminal practitioners have all practised prior to the inception of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms into Canadian Law in April, 1982. As a result, we have participated in this important development of Canadian Criminal Law. We are aware of the complexity of an individual's rights and vigorously work to defend those rights.
